Moses was a great leader and an incredibly important figure in the history of our faith. Moses bolstered the faith of God’s people when they were slaves in Egypt and when they were literally lost in the wilderness. But Moses was also an unlikely leader. His survival during infancy was against the order of Pharaoh (Exodus 1:22 ), he murdered an Egyptian and hid the evidence (Exodus 2:11-12 ), and he questioned his competency to do what God had asked of him (Exodus 3:11 and 4:1, 10).Moses did it. He led God’s people from captivity to freedom. He led them from reliance on human effort to a more certain reliance on God’s faithfulness. He knew the heart of true worship and he stood up to an oppressive force, courageously leading the effort to restore hope to God’s people. The story of Moses certainly has much to offer to us in what it means to live a life of faith in times of self-doubt, political and economic uncertainty, and the search for faith we are all on. In the weeks ahead, we will not only hear the story of Moses, we will seek to understand what the witness and faith of Moses says about living a life of faith today.
