FAQs

For questions about Sunday mornings, check out What to Expect.

  • What denomination is Southwood?
Southwood is a congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ELCA). We know that might still leave you with questions, so we've tried to explain What We Believe in plain language.
  • Is Southwood new to Lincoln?
Southwood moved to our new location at 9300 S. 40th Street in February, 2007, but we have been worshiping, growing, and serving in Lincoln for over 35 years. Learn more about our history.
  • What kinds of activities do you have for children and youth?
Check out all our programming for Children & Families (3 years - 5th grade), Middle School Youth, and High School Youth.
  • How do I join Southwood?
If you're ready to join Southwood as a ministry partner, come to our next Discover Southwood session. For more information contact Nicole Mroczek or the church office, 423-5511.
  • How do I get started on planning a wedding at Southwood?
At Southwood, we want to be the church for your marriage, not just for your wedding. Southwood members have the opportunity to use our facilities for weddings, based on scheduling availability. If you are a member, please contact the church office (423-5511) to discuss scheduling and other details. If you have been attending Southwood regularly but have not joined yet, we cannot book a wedding for you until you attend a Discover Southwood class.
  • How do I get involved at Southwood?
Find a way to Get Connected that works for you, or find a way to use your gifts to Serve others.

We Believe ...

  • Communion in a God that has created us and blesses us with all that we have in this life.
  • God loves us so much that he sent his son Jesus to this earth to save us from our own self destruction and lead us to a more abundant life.
  • Jesus died for our sins, and through him we receive incredible grace and forgiveness for daily living.
  • Jesus rose from the dead on the first Easter Sunday, and because he lives, we too will live an eternity with him in heaven.
  • God does not leave us alone, but sends to live within us the Holy Spirit.
  • The Bible is the inspired Word of God, and through the Bible God reveals his will and purpose for our lives.
  • Jesus left us two sacraments that remind us of his love: Baptism and Holy Communion. In Baptism, God claims us as one of his children, washes away our sins, and sends to us the Holy Spirit. In Communion, God forgives us our sins, and strengthens us for service in the world.
  • All of this is a free gift given to us by a loving gracious God.
  • Since we have such a great and wonderful gift, we should share it with others.

What to Expect

  • cl1010_entry1When are Sunday services?
Southwood has services at 8:30, 9:45, and 11:00.
  • How many people attend worship services?
Our average attendance for all three services is around 1,250. Depending on the service time, individual service attendance ranges from 300-500. Our busiest service is the 9:45 service.
  • What is worship like at Southwood?
Southwood's worship style is an eclectic blend of traditional and contemporary music accompanied by lessons aimed at helping people live out God's purposes in their daily lives. On 1st and 3rd Sundays, we welcome all who are baptized and believe that Christ is present in the sacrament to join us in Holy Communion.
  • What should I wear?
Wear what you feel is comfortable and appropriate for worship. There's no dress code at Southwood, and Sunday morning attire ranges from jeans and t-shirts to suits and ties. Some prefer to dress up while others prefer to dress down, but we're all here for the same reason—to focus our hearts and minds on God.
  • Are there activities for my children?
We offer Sunday School classes at 8:30, 9:45, and 11:00 for children and youth ages 3 years through 8th grade. Our High School Youth meet for Sunday School at 11:00. We also have a nursery available for children age 5 and under during all three Sunday services.
  • What else is happening on Sunday mornings?
Visit the Cafe before and after services for coffee, tea, donut holes, and a chance to visit in an informal setting. At 9:45 a.m., join one of our pastors in the Fellowship Hall for Adult Sunday School.
