Do Not Judge

Do Not Judge

Passage: Matthew 7:1-5

Speaker: Pastor Greg Olson

Series: Matthew

Sermon Notes

Jesus says we should not judge others.

What kind of judging are we talking about?

  • Judging another’s faith
  • Judging out of vindictiveness
  • Judging to condemn
  • Judging to compare in order to make us feel better about ourselves

When we judge others we are usurping the place of God.

  • Only God has the power and authority to judge in these matters.

Jesus goes on to say that when we judge others we are bringing God’s judgment onto ourselves.

  • The real problem is that the accuser is a hypocrite.
  • Hypocrisy means: to perform external acts of judgment that mask our own inner corruption.
  • All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. Romans 3:23 (NRSV)
  • The hypocrite doesn’t see their own sin.

Christians need to find balance.

  1. We are not to judge. At the same time, we are to discern wisely.
  2. Think sensibly—don’t get carried away emotionally.  Don’t get carried to extremes.
  3. Always side on the side of grace.
  4. Remember—God is the final authority and judge.  We don’t know what is really in someone’s heart, but God does.
