Does God Help Those Who Help Themselves?

Does God Help Those Who Help Themselves?

Passage: Matthew 25:31-46

Speaker: Pastor Greg Olson

Series: Half Truths

Sermon Notes

The Bible contains no such verse. The history of this saying comes from Greek mythology dating back to 500 bc. But it was popularized by Ben Franklin in 1736. The message of this Half-truth is just plain false. It is not Christian in its thought or intent.

God does expect us to do something, but God also expects us to do something to make this world a better place.

We also need to care for the poor, the sick, the grieving, etc. There are times when we need each other. Here are just a few examples from scripture how God calls us to care for others.

  • James 1:27—care for the widows and orphans.
  • Matthew 25—the poor, the sick, the imprisoned, the lonely, the refugees, the hopeless.
  • Luke 10—the Good Samaritan.
  • Proverbs 10:4—happy are generous people because they give some of their food to the poor.

The point is this. God helps those who can’t help themselves. And we are God’s hand, feet and love in action. Showing compassion and mercy for those who struggle is part of the very character of God and a foundation of our faith.
