Community Missions

Community Missions at Southwood equips and empowers people to be the Body of Christ in the world by ministering to the needs of people in our community. We focus on three main areas:

  • Hunger – We will provide over 23,000 meals to people in Lincoln this year through partnerships with the Backpack Program, Matt Talbot, Gathering Place, Meals on Wheels, Center for People in Need and the Lutheran Food Pantry. Learn more about our Hunger Missions and how you can volunteer!
  • Mentoring – Our City Impact and Teammate mentors spend over 2,500 hours mentoring children each year. Learn more about our Mentoring Missions and how you can serve!
  • Medical – Medical and non-medical volunteers from Southwood provide two free medical clinics per month in a partnership with Clinic with a Heart. Last year our volunteers provided medical care to over 500 people. Learn more about our Medical Missions and how you can get involved!

Clinic with a Heart

Clinic With a HeartOur volunteers help staff the clinic on the 3rd Tuesday and Thursday of each month at Clinic With A Heart at 1701 S 17th Street. No medical background is required to be a part of the clinic—just a love for people and a heart for serving. Non-medical volunteers help with greeting, registration, traffic flow, childcare and hospitality.

Lutheran Food Pantry

Help stop hunger in our community! You can serve by donating food, delivering donations from Southwood to the Food Pantry, stocking shelves or packing boxes at the Pantry, or delivering boxes from the Pantry to Southwood when we receive a request for food. Items needed for February are juice, pasta, canned meat, cereal, Hamburger Helper, Jell-O and puding. Need more details on how you can serve?

Please do not bring used, open or expired items, the Food Panty cannot use those items.

TeamMates

An hour a week can change a life. TeamMates mentors spend one-on-one time with an elementary, middle or high school youth—just one hour a week during the course of a school year. Youth who are mentored receive support and guidance from a caring adult and show measurable improvement in academic achievement, attendance and disicpline referrals. Mentored youth are more likely to stay in school and graduate and show improvement in interpersonal relationships. Find out what a difference an hour can make.

The Gathering Place

The Gathering Place (1448 E Street) serves a free evening meal to needy people each weekday evening. A team from Southwood serves the evening meal on the 2nd Monday and 3rd Thursday of each month.
