Hunger

Southwood will provide over 23,000 meals to people in Lincoln this year through partnerships with the Backpack Program, Matt Talbot, Gathering Place, Meals on Wheels, Center for People in Need and the Lutheran Food Pantry. Below is more information about our Hunger Missions and how you can get involved!

Stock the Shelves

Stock the Shelves—MayStock the Shelves

Bring your donations to Southwood Central to help Stock the Shelves at the Lutheran Food Pantry.

This month’s needs include:

  • Macaroni & Cheese
  • Canned Fruit
  • Jelly
  • Peanut Butter
  • Crackers
  • Canned Meals

Lutheran Food Pantry

Help stop hunger in our community! You can serve by donating food, delivering donations from Southwood to the Food Pantry, stocking shelves or packing boxes at the Pantry, or delivering boxes from the Pantry to Southwood when we receive a request for food. Items needed for May are fruit, jelly, peanut butter, macaroni & cheese, crakcers, canned meals and personal care items. Need more details on how you can serve?

Please do not bring used, open or expired items, the Food Panty cannot use those items.

The Gathering Place

The Gathering Place (1448 E Street) serves a free evening meal to needy people each weekday evening. A team from Southwood serves the evening meal on the 2nd Monday and 3rd Thursday of each month.

Tabitha

Brighten someone's day with your kindness! Deliver meals provided by Tabitha to members of our community who cannot cook for themselves.

  • Meals on Wheels delivers a hot, noon meal to individuals in Lincoln who are homebound or recovering from an injury or illness.
  • Deliver a food sack that includes staple food items with nutritious meals to individuals who are homebound. Volunteers must be able to lift 30 pounds.

Matt Talbot Kitchen & Outreach

Southwood partners with Matt Talbot (2121 N. 27th Street) by preparing and serving a meal on the 4th Tuesday and 5th Friday of each month. You can get involved by:

  • Providing cookies or cleaned, wrapped potatoes for baking
  • Helping at Matt Talbot to prepare, serve, and/or clean up for the meal

Food Bank Backpack Program

Through the Lincoln Food Bank Southwood provides funding and volunteers to bring 50 food-filled BackPacks every Friday to children in need at Saratoga Elementary School. You can get involved!

  • Help sort and pack food—Sundays at noon in the Fellowship Hall
  • Deliver food to Saratoga—Thursday afternoons
  • Distribute BackPacks at Saratoga—Friday afternoons

Neighborhood Food Distribution

Help distribute food boxes directly to the people who need them at Center for People in Need's warehouse (3901 N. 27th Street) on the first and fifth Tuesday's of each month at 4:00 p.m. This is a great family service opportunity.
