Hunger Ministries

Food Bank BackPack Program & Saratoga Elementary

In 2007, Southwood raised almost 7,000 pounds of food to benefit the Food Bank BackPack Program.  Beginning in 2008, we will provide funding and volunteers to bring 50 food-filled BackPacks every Friday to children in need at Saratoga Elementary School. You can get involved!
  • Help sort and pack food -- Sundays at noon in the Fellowship Hall
  • Deliver food to Saratoga -- Thursday afternoons
  • Distribute BackPacks at Saratoga -- Friday afternoons
Find out more about how Southwood Serves Saratoga...and how you can get involved!  Contact Phyllis Busch.

Matt Talbot Kitchen & Outreach

Southwood partners with Matt Talbot (19th & R) by preparing and serving a meal on the 4th Tuesday and 5th Friday of each month. You can get involved by providing cookies or cleaned, wrapped potatoes for baking OR by being at Matt Talbot to prepare, serve, and/or clean up for the meal. To learn more about how you can get involved, contact  Leigh Porter.

Gathering Place

The Gathering Place (1448 E Street) serves a free evening meal to needy people each weekday evening.  A team from Southwood serves the evening meal on the 2nd Monday and 3rd Thursday of each month.  To get involved, contact Keith Napolitano

Meals On Wheels

Brighten someone's day with your kindness! Deliver meals provided by Meals On Wheels to members of our community who cannot cook for themselves. Contact Rhoda Claridge for information on how you can serve.

Lutheran Food Pantry

Help stop hunger in our community! You can serve by donating food, delivering donations from Southwood to the Food Pantry, stocking shelves (Items needed for June are:  juice, pasta products & canned fruit) or packing boxes at the Pantry, or delivering boxes from the Pantry to Southwood when we receive a request for food. For more details on how you can serve, contact Joyce Scheffler.

Youth Mentoring

TeamMates

An hour a week can change a life.  TeamMates mentors spend one-on-one time with an elementary, middle or high school youth -- just one hour a week during the course of a school year.  Youth who are mentored receive support and guidance from a caring adult and show measurable improvement in academic achievement, attendance and disicpline referrals. Mentored youth are more likely to stay in school and graduate and show improvement in interpersonal relationships.  Find out what a difference
an hour can make.

City Impact

City Impact seeks to minister God's love to Lincoln's urban neighborhood.  They do just that through Tuesday Night Bible Clubs that help 125 children and youth grow in their faith and in social and life skills.  At City Impact's new  Impact Learning Center,  adult reading mentors spend one-on-one time using a proven curriculum to increase kids' reading skills -- as much as one grade level in only 9-weeks!  Find out more about how you can get involved at City Impact!

Clinic With A Heart

Clinic With A Heart is a free medical clinic at 3910 N. 27th Street staffed entirely by volunteers. Southwood partners with CWAH by staffing the clinic on the 2nd Tuesday of each month. No medical background is required to be a part of the clinic -- just a love for people and a heart for serving. Non-medical volunteers help with greeting, registration, traffic flow, childcare, and hospitality.  Contact  Jo Sheets to learn more.

Center For People In Need

Each month several people from Southwood serve at Center for People In Need (3901 N 27th St). They sort large quantities of corporate donations, which are then distributed free of charge to human services agencies in Nebraska and the surrounding area. Watch the Calendar of Events for future serving dates, or contact Merlyn Schuster for more information.
