Lighting the Way

As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” (John 9:5 NRSV)

You can make a lot of impact in this world, but if there’s one thing you should be known for, let it be your light. Kelly Brunkhorst first learned to “Be A Light” during his childhood and has continued to apply these lessons to make the world brighter throughout his lifetime.

Like many other Southwood members, Kelly grew up in a small town. Starting as early as middle school, he was ushering in his hometown church. The love of volunteerism also drew Kelly and his family to Southwood. “Volunteering my time back to the church has always given
me a greater connection to the mission of the church and its members.”

Kelly volunteers in a variety of ways at Southwood but a couple of his favorites are Southwood Serves and Meals on Wheels. “There’s something about delivering a meal and creating a conversation that is a great feeling.”

In addition to volunteering, Kelly and his family also support Southwood financially. “The church, programs and staff are like a great beacon (from Pastor Greg’s sermon) that draws you in. This work takes financial resources and broad support.” Kelly also leans on past advice from his parents when planning their family’s annual pledge “My parents taught us support of the church, even during financially tough times, shouldn’t waver.”

When asked to share his advice about giving, Kelly encourages others to pray for guidance. “I am continually amazed at the breadth of Southwood’s programs and what this offers every member, depending on how they wish to be involved. Knowing how many individuals outside of the church are touched by a member’s financial commitment eases our decision.”

You can let your light shine by submitting your 2022 commitment card TODAY.
