Nebraska Wesleyan University's University Choir and Chamber Singers will be joined by the Lincoln Boys Choir's Concert Choir and Southeast High School's Court Choir to celebrate the music and message of the season in Tidings of Comfort and Joy: Christmas With Wesleyan.
This free concert will be offered in the beautiful sanctuary of Southwood Lutheran Church, Lincoln, on Friday evening, December 6 at 7:30 p.m. The four choral ensembles will be accompanied by strings, flute, oboe, trumpet, horn, timpani, piano and organ, as they share the story of Christmas in timeless music from across the ages and around the world. The audience will be invited to sing in several beloved carols to add a dimension to the spiritual power of the program.
Tom Trenney, Visiting Assistant Professor of Music and Conductor of Choirs at Nebraska Wesleyan University, serves as Artistic Director and Conductor of Christmas With Wesleyan. In selecting this year's theme, Tom reflects that "the news cycle has become so disheartening. Bad news seems to come to us faster than we can keep up with it—from the heartbreak of school shootings and floods, to the devastation of racism and hurricanes. I'm afraid even to have the news on TV when our children are home. It is important for us to remember that, in spite of the discord and division of our time, Christmas brings us—even today—a measure of hope in our despair and a promise of light in our darkness. It seems healing for these young people to share some good news—some tidings of comfort and joy—not to escape the challenges of our time, but to strengthen and inspire us to face them with renewed hope and resilient faith, in simple acts of love and grace. We offer this music and message as a gift to our community, to bring people together to remember the good news of this season."
The concert is free, and no reservations are required. A free-will offering will be collected to benefit the community outreach of the choirs at Nebraska Wesleyan University.
