Sermon Notes

Did you catch the contrast between the fear of the Roman soldiers and the fear of the women in the Easter story?  The Roman soldiers were so scared they fainted.  The women’s fear was different.  They didn’t faint. Rather, they seemed energized.

Same word, different reactions.  There is fear that scares us and incapacitates us.  There is also fear that pulls us out of ourselves and our circumstances into a world of awe and wonder.  It pulls us out of ourselves into the actions of God.

  • This is the fear that keeps us on our toes with our eyes wide open.
  • This is the fear that prevents us from thinking we know it all.
  • This is the fear that prevents us from acting presumptuously and therefore destroying something good and beautiful, like a loving relationship.

Fear of the Lord is not scary.  In most cases, it is followed by awe, by astonishment, by wonder and amazement.  This is the power of the resurrection.

Do not let fear paralyze you. Let it move you closer to Christ knowing that he has the power to bring you new life, now and forevermore.
