Sermon Notes

History of the Hymn

  • Written by John Mason Neale in 1851.
  • He worked to translate ancient Greek and Latin hymns into English.
  • Neale was an Anglican Priest who because of illness served most of his career at a home for the elderly.
  • Other noted hymns: Good King Wenceslas, Good Christian Friends Rejoice, and All Glory, Laud and Honor.

Old Testament Names for the Messiah

  • Emmanuel, Wisdom, Lord, Branch, Key, Bright Morning Star, King are all names of the Messiah (Anointed One).
  • These names are found in scripture and describe what the Israelites hoped their Messiah to be when he came to rule and reconcile creation.

What are our exile moments?

  • O Come, O Come Emmanuel is about the Jewish community being in exile and longing for home.
  • What times in your life have you felt exiled?
  • When we are mourning, lonely, in broken relationships?

God with Us

  • How do you see God with you?
  • Do we need a Savior or have we managed to save ourselves through other means?
  • Jesus came as Emmanuel to be with us, for us, and in us.
  • Jesus’ arrival into the world provides new hope and promise in unexpected ways.

God is FOR us,
God is WITH us,
God is IN us!
