Sermon Notes

Jesus enters into Jerusalem

Did he know how it was going to all turn out? Judas’ betrayal, Peter’s denial, the trial, the stripping, the scourging, the crucifixion? Did he have any idea?

The Crowds were cheering him on

They seem so happy and excited to see him. They are screaming out Hosanna, which means: Save Us!  “Save us from the Romans, from the suffering and injustice of this world.” The crowds were giddy over his arrival. They began to throw their clothes on the ground and wave palm branches in the air. They were treating Jesus like a king.

But it didn’t last

The same folks who hailed him as a king turned on him. Their shouts of “Hosanna” turned to “Crucify Him!” Have you ever had a great spiritual experience and felt like your heart was changed, having been touched by God, only to return to the same old ways and routines?  What happened?  Did it not make a difference?

There is an old hymn that sings:

Ride on, ride on, in majesty. In lowly pomp ride on to die. Jesus is God in human form, who has come to save us. He rides into the gates of hell to take on the power of sin and death. And to that we sing, Hosanna! Blessed is he that comes in the name of the Lord!
