Who are we listening to? There are many voices shouting these days. This is the challenge and sometimes temptation we all have to live with: What voice or voices are authoritative in our lives? Is Jesus one of them? Listen and find out!

Sermon Notes

Notes from the Text:

  • Moses represents life with God now. Elijah represents life with God forever.
  • Moses and Elijah represent hope and fulfillment.
  • God’s voice is heard. This happens two times in the life of Jesus—once at his baptism and once at the transfiguration.  The second time God says—LISTEN TO HIM.

Who are we listening to?

There are many voices shouting these days. This is the challenge we all have to live with: What voice or voices are authoritative, because whatever voice it is, it becomes our guide and direction—our God.

How does Jesus’ voice direct and influence you?

  1. In your family.  How do you love and serve your spouse, or children, or grandchildren, or aging parent, or extended family member?
  2. Your character.  What role does integrity play in how you live your life?  And what voice helps you determine the values that shape your integrity?
  3. Treatment of others.  How do you treat the stranger?  How do you respond to issues that separate people like racism, sexism, poverty, evil, etc.
  4. Ethical decision-making.  Where do you go to find guides for how to navigate ethical decisions?
  5. These are the distinct perspectives of following Christ.  These are the things the we learn when we listen to him and to his teachings.

Listening to Jesus is our hope

  • It is our hope for doing life with each other.
  • It is our hope for life eternal.

Are we listening?
